City of Oxford joins Power A Clean Future Ohio, becoming 44th community in Ohio
(COLUMBUS, OH)—The City of Oxford recently joined Power a Clean Future Ohio (PCFO), furthering the community’s commitment to improving sustainability and reducing emissions. PCFO will work with local leaders to provide technical assistance and partnerships to help staff as they work toward the goal of adopting clean energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions as identified by the city’s Climate Action Steering Committee and Environmental Commission. These include a 50% reduction over the 2019 baseline by 2030, a 90% reduction over the 2019 baseline by 2040 and by 2045 community-wide neutrality.
City priorities include 100% renewable energy aggregation, a commitment to the global covenant of mayors, the completion of greenhouse gas inventory with university students and an urban forestry program.
Joe Flarida, executive director of Power a Clean Future Ohio said, “Power a Clean Future Ohio supports communities like the City of Oxford with the tools and resources to implement practical policies specific to their needs as they seek to reduce carbon emissions. We welcome the City of Oxford in joining our efforts to identify approaches to clean energy that are achievable, measurable, equitable, and economical.”
“I am very excited that Oxford will be working with other communities in Ohio who are responding to the challenge of the Climate Crisis by taking positive actions,” said Peggy Branstrator, member of Environmental Commission and Climate Action Steering Committee. “Working together and trading ideas will strengthen everyone.”
“I am very pleased that the City of Oxford is joining this state-wide coalition,” said Sandi Woy-Hazelton, Vice Chair of Climate Action Steering Committee and member of the Ohio Environmental Council. “The mission of PCFO is to assist local communities in implementing measures that will reduce carbon emissions. Our commitment to the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy means that we have already embarked on the path to meet our state-wide goals, and we will join the one-third of all Ohioans who live in a PCFO community. This is the best example of how small efforts can combine to produce far-reaching results.”
The City of Oxford became the 44th community to join Power a Clean Future Ohio. More than one-third of Ohio residents now live in a PCFO Community, demonstrating the overwhelming commitment Ohioans and Ohio local governments have to creating a clean energy future for our state.
The City of Oxford’s Environmental Commission seeks to promote and foster an awareness of environmental issues in the community, ensure the consideration of environmental quality through community programs, and provide information to the community. The Commission also advises, reports, and recommends to City Council on environmental issues referred to them by Council.
Power a Clean Future Ohio is a nonpartisan coalition that is dedicated to working with local communities to develop equitable clean energy solutions to benefit the well-being of residents, the environment, and the economy.
