Power a Clean Future Ohio Statement on Trump Administration Freezing IRA & BIL Funding

UPDATE (1/28/25): A federal judge has halted the President’s suspension of funding for federal aid programs. The order blocking the Trump Administration’s directive will expire on Monday, February 3, 2025, at 5:00 PM EST.

On Monday, January 20, 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order suspending funding disbursements for the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), also known as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL).

This landmark legislation has had a transformative impact on Ohio's economy, environment, and communities, injecting billions of dollars in private investment, creating more than 15,000 new, good-paying jobs, and lowering costs for families.

On January 17, 2025, it was reported that an estimated 84% of Inflation Reduction Act grants, totaling $96.7 billion, have been obligated.

While these actions have undoubtedly caused uncertainty for many Ohio governments and businesses awarded funds, Power a Clean Future Ohio will continue to monitor these developments and their potential impacts. We are committed to providing our communities and partners with guidance and resources and remain dedicated to supporting local communities in transitioning to sustainable energy solutions.

Columbia Law School's Sabin Center for Climate Change Law has issued a summary of the Trump Administration's executive orders on energy and the environment that is available here.

Statement from Power a Clean Future Ohio Executive Director Joe Flarida

“The Trump Administration has made it clear that they want to ‘unleash American energy’ and embrace a policy of ‘energy dominance.’ Fortunately, that work has been well underway, driven by historic federal investments in clean energy over the past three years. This new Administration has now ground progress to a halt. These are not partisan issues - they're fundamental to our economic prosperity and our national security.

"The IRA and IIJA have powered major progress in Ohio. This legislation has revitalized industries and stimulated our local economy, resulting in good-paying jobs for solar manufacturers and installers, electricians, EV battery manufacturers and engineers, and construction and labor trades supporting the fastest-growing job sector – clean energy. Playing politics with our jobs and economic future is a game that everyone loses.

"I hope this Administration will live up to their promises to unleash American energy, and release the funding for the long list of projects in Ohio that are now on hold, jeopardizing over $3 billion of investment. We, in Ohio, simply can’t afford that type of short-sighted leadership.

"Power a Clean Future Ohio's mission to fight climate change through clean energy becomes even more critical in times of policy uncertainty. We will not allow political shifts to derail our progress toward a sustainable future - the stakes for our communities and our planet are too high."
